New York is More than NYC–Who Knew?

In April of 2014, I had the opportunity to visit my employer’s office location in Sleepy Hollow, NY. Yes, Sleepy Hollow is a real place, now a neighborhood of the township of Tarrytown. Driving from the motels in Tarrytown to Sleepy Hollow on S. R. 9 takes you past the Old Dutch Church (sorry, no photos) and its approx. 300-year-old graveyard, along with some wooded rural areas. It’s easy to see where Washington Irving got the inspiration for his Legend.

The trip lasted over a weekend before continuing on into the Manhattan office, so on Saturday I spent the day walking around Tarrytown, since I had hardly got to see the town previously. As you may know, it sits on the eastern bank (rive gauche) of the Hudson River. On the main street that leads down to some of the old docks, I found this picturesque scene of nearly century-old houses and their current occupants’ modes of transportation.

A little further down the hill, I found this neat-looking church.

Some of the group I was working with ate one evening at the Harvest-on-Hudson restaurant. It was quite good, if you have an expense account to defray the cost. They have some fascinating decor, such as this tapestry in the lobby, and this nice gentleman ready to pick up your empty glass.

On Sunday afternoon I checked in to my Manhattan hotel room, which had a fine view of the famous Art Deco Chrysler Building. It was a bit foggy and drizzly that day, but I think this daytime photo turned out pretty well. At night, the fuzzy air gave the lighted pinnacle a nice aura.

Of course, Manhattan has its share of old buildings, too. Out for dinner on my own one evening, came across this little gem downtown.

Finally, another night shot out the hotel window of an interesting piece of the skyline.
